Comparing Google Search with AI Mode

This is a snapshot of a beta feature. It’s June 2025. To test Google’s AI Mode, you currently have to beam yourself to the US and go to Search Labs.

Or you do a Google search, get an AI Overview, and discover, top left, a new feature called “AI Mode”.

Asked about layoffs at Business Insider, AI Mode gives you an answer, not just a summary. The chat interface works like ChatGPT or Perplexity, meaning: Google search’s useful autocomplete is missing.

Note that as of today, Google turns off AI Overviews for searches relating to recent news events. In AI Mode, not so much.

Google has been especially cautious around elections so far – Gemini refuses to make statements, there are no AI Overviews. In AI mode, that changes too:
