Tarbell Center for AI Journalism, a nonprofit close to the AI safety movement, will spend $10 million on AI coverage by the end of 2027. Kevin Roose and Casey Newton get $480k for their new NPR video podcast “Machine Gods.” (Max Tani, Semafor)
- The Tarbell Center for AI Journalism, backed by effective altruism-aligned nonprofits, is pledging $10 million by end of 2027 to fund AI coverage at newsrooms large and small. First grants go to NPR's new Kevin Roose and Casey Newton video podcast and NPR's politics-and-AI desk, totaling $730,000. The funder claims two editorial firewalls and full donor disclosure, but the AI industry and political right have already complained the funding tilts coverage toward safety concerns.
