Twitter’s a Dumpster Fire, So Why Is It So Hard to Leave?

posted 30.11.2024 by oler

Just like Bitcoin, Bluesky is having a moment right now. But for the opposite reason.

After Elon Musk and Trump won the US election, the classic “Why You Should Really, Truly, Absolutely Quit Twitter This Time” posts are making the rounds again. But here I am, still hesitating to hit that “Deactivate Account” button.

Not because I believe I could make any difference there argumentatively, or that it might still be worthwhile to post against bots and far-right extremists. No, iIt’s way more mundane than that.

I’ve been on Twitter since 2008—that’s practically ancient in internet years. I’ve spent more time there than anywhere else online. It’s where I’ve met a ton of people and connected with some seriously awesome communities. At one point, I even had 15k followers. A proper little crowd, you know?

Sure, I stopped actually posting there ages ago. But I still find myself scrolling through occasionally. It’s like visiting your old hometown—everything’s changed, but you can’t help but look around.

But it has turned into dumpster fire. One minute I’m scrolling past ads warning me about an imminent financial apocalypse (better buy gold!), the next I’m seeing Elon’s posts that I could’ve sworn I’d blocked.

And don’t even get me started on the galaxy-brain takes from NZZ and Reichelt. It’s like a parade of stuff I absolutely don’t want to see.

So why am I still there? Nostalgia? Habit? The digital equivalent of rubbernecking at a car crash? Maybe it’s time to finally let it go.

Of course I’m on Threads, and naturally on Mastodon. And yes, I’m on Bluesky too, down there in the tail of this beautifully graph from Joel Gustafson. I haven’t really put much effort into Bluesky. It’s time I did!
