Why would a brand known for quality journalism even consider getting close to generative AI?

posted 21.11.2024 by oler

I was invited to speak at Otto Group’s internal conference Discover AI 3.0 and tried to give some answers. And I petted a Spot robot from Boston Dynamics and I’m somehow still alive! Before it was my turn, there was plenty to hear about AI in general, thanks to Philipp Klöckner, about AI in logistics, AI at Tchibo (Omar Hairani), and a hackathon by Otto employees.

I talked about how important the trust of its readers is to DER SPIEGEL. That we do everything to gain and maintain this trust. At first, this must seem to conflict with generative AI, which is unreliable because it is always somewhat random, spews untruths, is full of biases, and seeks mediocrity and the lowest common denominator.

That’s all true – and yet, we have identified a whole range of meaningful applications and are working on implementing AI in our operations. It was fun to present and discuss our approach!

Thanks for the invite, Christian Davepon, and good meeting CFO and incoming CEO Petra Scharner-Wolff, Dr. Sebastian Walter, and of course Handelsblatt‘s Larissa Holzki.

And it was nice to see Florian Leuerer again, who taught me AI programming with Python in an evening crash course earlier this year. Setting up Langchain chains and RAG applications has helped me get into the world of AI and better understand what’s going on behind the scenes.

Now, I can launch a Jupyter Notebook and access the API of new models – even though today I’m more focused on the big picture.
